Morocco Classified Hotels
Classified hotels are almost always in a town’s Ville Nouvelle – the “new” or administrative quarters, built by the French and usually set slightly apart from the old Medina quarters.
Since 1993, classified hotels have been allowed, regardless of star-rating, to set their own prices – and to vary them according to season and depending on demand prices and ratings should be on display at reception and behind the bedroom door, but if in doubt about value for money, don’t hesitate to ask to see the room in question; indeed, you will normally be invited to do so.
At the bottom end of the scale – a one-star hotel (8 to 0 in our price code) – a basic double room with a washbasin will cost around 10/$17 a night, with a shower and WC around 12/$20. Moving into two- and three star hotels, you will be paying around 25/$45 for a double with shower and WC, at the top end of the scale. You get a fair bit more comfort for your money and there are a scattering of elegant, old hotels in these categories – places which used to be the grand hotel in town but have since declined. At the top end of the mid-range, the Ibis Moussafir chain (®www.ibishotel.com) offers reliable hotels always located next to rail stations – though rather characterless and almost identical in every town, they’re comfortable, efficient and good value.
For European/American standards of comfort, you need to look, on the whole, at four star hotels in Morocco. These are used by most foreign tour operators and charge around $70-120 for a double, though often a lot less if you get them as part of a package tour. If you can afford the upper end of this scale, you’ll be moving into real style, with rooms looking out onto palm shaded pools and gardens – at their best in buildings that have been converted from old palace residences. But even here, you are advised to check what’s on offer. The plumbing, heating and lighting are sometimes unreliable; restaurants are often closed and swimming pools empty. Many of these classified hotels in Morocco were state-owned and are now privatized, which has led to some improvements. Hotels in this price category are particularly likely to offer discounted and promotional rates off-season.
Hotels accorded the five-star-luxury rating, (price codes to 0) more or less
guarantee style, either in a historic conversion (the most famous of which are the Hótel Mamounia in Marrakesh and the Palais Jamai’ in Fes) or in a modern building with a splendid pool and all the international comforts.
In the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, accommodation at the lower end of the spectrum costs about twice as much as it does in Morocco proper, with a double room in the cheapest pensions at €25-30. At the top end of the scale, prices tend to be much the same as they are in Morocco, with four-star hotels charging around €70-100.
