Marrakesh – Getting There

Arriving at the train station, on the edge of the new town Gueliz, a petit taxi is a good idea, unless you fancy a fifteen-minute walk to the Gueliz hotels, or a longer walk or bus ride to the Medina; the taxi fare should be no more than 15dh ($20) to the Medina, less to hotels in Gueliz. The bus stop opposite the station to the Place de Foucauld, alongside Place Djemaa el Fna. The youth hostel, on the other hand, is very close to the station – just five minutes on foot.

Gare Marrakech

The gare routiere (for long-distance bus services other than CTM or Supra tours, for which see below) is just outside the walls of the Medina by Bab Doukkala. You can take also a grands taxis they can drop you off in any many places in Marrakesh. You can walk into the center of Gueliz from the lagare routiere in around ten minutes by following Avenue des Nations Unies (to the right as you exit the bus station, then straight on bearing right); to the Place Djemaa el Fna it’s around 25 minutes, most easily accomplished by following the Medina walls (to your left as you exit the bus station) down to Avenue Mohammed V, where you turn left. If you don’t fancy the walk, hop in a petit taxi (about 10dh to the Djemaa el Fna, less to Gueliz).

Supratours services from Essaouira and Agadir arrive next to the train station, CTM services at their office in Gueliz.

Grands taxis from the High Atlas villages of Asni, Imlil, Setti Fatma and Oukaimeden arrive at their own gare routiere, half a kilometre southwest of Bab er Robb – a longish walk or a 10dh taxi ride from the Djemaa el Fna, 15dh to Gueliz.

The city’s airport is 4km to the southwest. The bus is supposed to run every half-hour to the Place Djemaa el Fna. Petits taxis or grands taxis are a better option.

Marrakesh airport

Arriving at the airport before 8 am. or after about 6pm any day of the week, you won’t always find the BMCE or Banque Populaire kiosk open to change money or travellers’ cheques, but there are ATMs in the arrivals hall; taxis will in any case accept euros, and sometimes dollars or sterling, at more or less the equivalent dirham. rate, or you can have them call at an ATM en route
