There’s a choice between staying in the Medina or the Ville Nouvelle (Gueliz), with further options in the hotel-dominated quarters of Hivernage or Semlalia, out on the Casablanca road, and a couple of places even further out, in the palmery.

The Medina has the main concentration of cheap hotels, most of which are quite pleasant, along with a few more expensive places on its periphery. Given the attractions of Place Djemaa el Fna and the souks, these have to be the first choice.

The main advantages of Gueliz hotels are their convenience if you are arriving late at night, particularly at the train station, and the greater concentration of more upmarket establishments with facilities such as a swimming pool. Hotels in Hivernage and Semlalia are all upmarket, modern buildings, consistently comfortable and sometimes with wonderful pools and design.

Semlalia, however, is a bit remote, and Hivernage, while not too far from the Djemaa el Fna, lacks any city life of its own.

Advance bookings for hotels are a wise idea, especially for the more popular places in the Medina. The worst times arc the Easter and Christmas/New Year holiday periods, when you may arrive and find virtually every decent place full to capacity.

Most of the accommodation in the Medina is grouped around a compact, easily walkable area just south of the Place Djemaa el Fna. The cheaper hotels and pensio11s detailed below are the best of those available, but there are many others in the same small area, which may be worth a try if those we’ve recommended are full. At time of writing, most pensions charge 80-120dh for a double room.
