Hostels in Morocco

Morocco has expanded its youth hostel organization in recent years, and now boasts twelve Auberges de Jeunesse nationwide. Most are clean and reasonably well run, and charges vary from 20dh (f1.25/$2.25) to 50dh (f3/$5.50) per person per night in a dorm.

Hostelling International (HI) membership cards are not required but you may have to paya little extra if you do not have one. The hostels in Morocco are located at Asni (High Atlas), Azrou (Middle Atlas), Casablanca, Chefchaouen, Fes, Goulmima, Marrakesh, Mehdiya, Meknes, Rabat, Rissani and Tangier. Addresses and details are given for all of these in the relevant sections of the guide; those at Casablanca, Marrakesh and Tangier recommend booking in advance. One general attraction is the opportunity for meeting other travellers, including young Moroccans on holiday. Further information on Moroccan youth hostels can be found in Hostelling morocco hostelInternational’s guide to Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific (f8.50 /$13.95), which can be consulted in most public libraries.

In the Djebel Toubkal area of the High Atlas mountains, the Club Alpin Francais (CAF) maintain five huts, or refuges, equipped for mountaineers and trekkers. These provide bunks or bedshelves for sleeping at 40-1 00dh([2.50-f6.25/$4.50-11.25) per person, with discounts for members of CAF or its affiliates, and for HI youth hostel card holders. Some refuges can provide meals and/or cooking facilities. They are detailed in the relevant sections.

Also in trekking areas, a number of locals offer rooms in their houses: an informal scheme which the Moroccan tourist authorities have begun promoting as gites d’é tape. Current charges range from 30dh (1.90/$3.40) for a “non-classé”  to 80dh (5/$9) for “1 e classe”; breakfast is charged at 15dh and an evening meal at 30-40dh.
