There’s a choice between staying in the Medina or the Ville Nouvelle (Gueliz), with further options in the hotel-dominated quarters of Hivernage or Semlalia, out on the Casablanca road, and a couple of places even further out, in the palmery.

Finding accommodation is easy enough, with seven hotels, all moderately priced. Of the two campsites, Camping Sidi Ifni, Avenue Sidi Mohammed (065 66 41 81), is rather spartan with little shade, and can get rather crowded (in fact, it’s often full), and Camping et Barco, Rue de la Plage (048 78 07 07), similarly shadeless, slightly pricier, and not tremendously secure, but right on the beach.

Campsites are to be found at intervals along most of the developed Moroccan coast and in most towns or cities of any size. They are inexpensive and often quite informal and makeshift, advertised from season to season on roadside signs. Morocco has expanded its youth hostel organization in recent years, and now boasts twelve Auberges de Jeunesse nationwide. Most are clean and reasonably well run, and charges vary from 20dh (f1.25/$2.25) to 50dh (f3/$5.50) per person per night in a dorm.

Hostelling International (HI) membership cards are not required but you may have to paya little extra if you do not have one. Classified hotels are almost always in a town’s Ville Nouvelle – the “new” or administrative quarters, built by the French and usually set slightly apart from the old Medina quarters.

Since 1993, classified hotels have been allowed, regardless of star-rating, to set their own prices – and to vary them according to season and depending on demand prices and ratings should be on display at reception and behind the bedroom door, but if in doubt about value for money, don’t hesitate to ask to see the room in question; indeed, you will normally be invited to do so.
