Car Rental in Morocco

Car Rental

Car rental in Morocco can be expensive, from around [220/$375 per week or [36/$65 a day (there’s usually a three-day minimum) for a basic car with unlimited mileage. You will be expected to leave a large deposit, and petrol prices are high. However, having a car does pay obvious dividends if you are pushed for time, allowing you to explore unusual routes and take in much more in a lot less time. This is especially true in the south, where getting around can be quite an effort if you have to rely on local buses. Driving yourself also gives a certain sense of invulnerability if Morocco’s hustling ways are getting too much for you.

Many visitors choose to rent a car in Casablanca, Marrakesh or Agadir, expressly for the southern routes. Car Rental MoroccoIf you’re organized, however, it usually works out cheaper to arrange car rental in advance through the travel agent who arranges your flight. Major international firms such as Hertz, Budget, Europcar, National and Avis have facilities for booking from home on toll-free or cheap-rate numbers or via the Internet.

The best value places for car rental when driving in Morocco are mostly in Casablanca and Agadir. Deals to go for are unlimited mileage and daily/weekly rates; paying by the kilometer invariably works out more expensive. Local firms have the advantage that the price is more likely to be negotiable, though the condition of the vehicle should be well checked. Many hotels can also arrange car rental, often at very reasonable rates. If you can’t or don’t want to drive yourself, car rental companies can usually arrange a driver for around 250dh ([16/$28) a day.

Before booking, be sure to find out if you can pick the car up in one city and return it to another. Most companies will allow this if they have more than one office. Check also, if booking in Morocco, whether you will be charged extra for payment with a credit card; there is often a (negotiable) six percent fee for this. Before setting out, make sure the car comes with spare tire, tool kit and full documentation – including insurance coverage, which is compulsory issue with all rentals. It’s a good idea to get full insurance to avoid charges for bumps and scratches. Note that most car rental agreements prohibit use of the car on unsurfaced roads, and you will be liable for any damage sustained if you do drive off-tarmac.

Whether you rent a car or drive your own when driving in Morocco, always make sure you’re carrying a spare tire in good condition (plus a jack and tools). Flat tires occur very frequently, even on fairly major roads, and you can often be in for a long wait until someone drives along with a possible replacement.

Carrying an emergency windscreen is also useful, especially if you are driving your own car for a long period of time. There are lots of loose stones on the hard shoulders of single lane roads and they can fly all over the place.
