Camping in Morocco

Campsites are to be found at intervals along most of the developed Moroccan coast and in most towns or cities of any size. They are inexpensive and often quite informal and makeshift, advertised from season to season on roadside signs. Most sites are very cheap, at around 10dh (65p/$1.10) per person, plus a similar charge for a tent or a car, and 20dh (1.30/$2.20) for a motor caravan or camper van; they usually have basic (and sometimes very basic) washing and toilet facilities. A few more upmarket places when camping in Morocco is in Meknes or Fes, for example, offer swimming pools and better facilities at around double the cost – sometimes more.

Note that Morocco campsites don’t tend to provide much security, and you should never leave valuables unattended. Camping outside official sites, this obviously applies even more, and if you want to do this, it’s wise to ask at a house if you can pitch your tent alongside – you’ll usually get a hospitable response. camping in morocco

If you’re trekking in the Atlas, it is often possible to pay someone to act as a guardian for your tent. In the south especially, and particularly in the winter, campsites are not much used by backpackers with tents, but rather by retired Europeans in campervans seeking the sun.

If traveling in a campervan and are camping in Morocco, you can often park up somewhere with a guardian, who will keep an eye on things for a small tip. You may be able to park outside a police station (commissariat). In the north of the country, at Larache and Kenitra, there are Centres d’Acceuil, also called Aires de Repose, which are rest areas for tourist coaches, with toilets, showers, a restaurant and guardian. There’s no fee for parking your camper here or using the facilities, but it is usual to pay a contribution of around 20dh to the guardian if you stay overnight.
